We were commissioned to renovate the interiors and gardens of a tired townhouse to create a stylish and relaxing bolthole in the world heritage city of Bath.
One of our favourite type of briefs, ensuring seamless cohesion inside and out, it covered every element of the design process, from spatial planning to lighting, electrics, kitchens, bathrooms and planting.
The house had plenty of character but felt a little unloved. A rickety conservatory was replaced with a stone extension, incorporating glass roof lights and big windows for that wonderfully light, bright and airy feel in the new kitchen. While outside, the garden was designed with complementary finishes, materials and colours to help create a sense of continuity between the interior and exterior spaces.
We combined antique and contemporary pieces to give the feeling of a home having naturally evolved over time; and key to this was incorporating some of our clients’ sentimental art and sculpture, so that it really represented their own style and personality.
The sitting room, dining and kitchen spaces are all linked visually so we adopted a warm, neutral colour palette throughout, with accent colours and interest added with the help of soft furnishings, sculptural accessories and houseplants.
A contemporary spa-like bathroom was added to the first floor, which incorporates a large free-standing tub overlooking the courtyard garden, as well as a wet-room style shower, semi-enclosed by a stylish panelled glass screen.
Each bedroom incorporates an original or antique piece, such as the Victorian bed frame in the attic room or the Gustavian wardrobe in the master suite. This helped to add layers of interest to the overall look and feel and provided a lovely lived-in patina and contrast to any more contemporary additions.
Our clients love colour, pattern and texture, so each space was designed with this firmly in mind. We particularly enjoyed using a large-scale patterned wallpaper by Lewis & Wood in the guest bedroom, which we echoed with fixtures and soft furnishings.
This characterful house now has a warm, welcoming feel and offers a comfortable yet supremely stylish escape for family living.
