Coastal Retreat
A calming coastal escape perfect for stylish stays on the Dorset coast
The brief was to create an understated Scandi coast feel, albeit with a glamorous vibe, mixing natural materials with metallics. We added touches of metallic in the form of planters, light fittings and accessories to lift the calming space.
Our client had the opportunity to purchase the property neighbouring their 19th century coastguard cottage on the Dorset coast. They took the plunge, with a view to creating guest accommodation and entertaining space for visiting friends and family, which also included converting the garage.
While the house had been recently developed, it was in need of modernisation. We worked alongside our client’s main contractor, Stonewood Builders, to create a scheme that integrated the two properties, ensuring a sense of cohesion between the two, while also maintaining the individual character and features.
Within the basement, we created a decadent entertaining space with a family movie room. Previously an unexciting space with little natural light, there’s a focal point big screen, vast sink-into sofa, warm textural finishes and illuminated alcoves to spotlight treasured objets d’art, ensuring this is now one of the most loved rooms in the house.
Our brief also extended to bathroom and kitchen design – where we used a pared back palette of blues, creams, bright white, stone, natural wood and slate with touches of warm rust to reflect the seaside location – and that of the surrounding gardens, linking inside with outside.
