COMMENT | FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHY IN INTERIOR DESIGN | WORDS BY JOHN LAW
Whilst there is nothing quite like a still family photograph in its charm, we’ve definitely noticed of recent that clients are looking for more nuanced ways to show their family history. This is quite possibly on the back of how we consume images on our phones and tablets – with our devices allowing us to view a wealth of photos on demand, and even highlighting memories on those anniversaries and dates that are personal to each of us.
As such, our clients are looking instead for more creative ways to invoke memories – whether a memento bought on a family holiday or an item that once belonged to a parent or grandparent. Collectively, these items can often offer so much more than a wall of family photos – a tactile, colourful, three-dimensional display that can be added to over time.
In this scheme in our own home, we mixed antique opera glasses bought together on a family trip, with a sketch of Naples bought by my grandfather-in-law on his travels, and a watercolour tablet used by my own grandfather – one that he would carry around with him wherever he went.
