Marrakech Musings

The owners of this property had recently fallen in love with the gardens of Morocco on their travels to Marrakech.

Working with the established apple trees that sit at the centre of the space, we created two entertaining spaces; one for dining, the other for relaxing and enjoying the last rays of the evening sun.

We took inspiration from the warm, earthy colour tones of the city’s inward-facing riad courtyards, their reflective tiled surfaces, and their inviting seating areas, to create this recent addition to our portfolio.

A tiled fireplace provides a focal point within this latter area, set against the terracotta wall behind.

The lawn was removed in favour of more generous planting spaces for pollinators and habitats for the garden’s wildlife, with muted colour tones for a greater sense of calm and sanctuary.

We introduced water too, using an ancient cooking pot from Rajasthan;

the water within reflecting the blossom of the apple trees that loom over it.

To reduce costs and to minimise the garden’s carbon footprint, we re-used stone and brick already in the garden, weaving it through the pink-hued hoggin that now links the two spaces. The garden’s old shed was repurposed too, with a new, rusted corrugated iron roof to add texture and interest – the rust effect reflected elsewhere in the raised CorTen steel beds that flank the house.
